AD, Thanks for the list of people who became unemployed since jan 2001 as a result of this present WorldWide Economic downturn. A million out of work a year for a number of years —- 2, 3, 10, 20, 25 years —- spells disaster in our planet. There will be chaos everywhere, regimes will come and go. I hope it won't come to that. If I understand how living things including humans in general prefer being alive than dead —- then I'd say this downturn is temporary, next year should be better.
In war and peace, we shed jobs in one area but we also create jobs in another area. As a result of the Sep 11 disaster, people may not spend money on vacations but then they have money for other recreations and have money to buy things that have CHIPs in them. Because of Anthrax scare, Small Pox scare many postal workers would be out of work but makers of drugs to combat viruses will be very busy. Just one Shopping Mall reported bombed and it will trigger the employment of Security Officers in all the malls even one or 2 or a lot of them guarding each store or concession inside the mall – just like I witnessed during my vacation in the Philippines 2 years ago. CHIPs will play an important role in the production of security gadgets worldwide. Who knows, we might soon have gadgets with CHIPs in them that test whether we have destructive viruses ready to inflict damages inside our bodies.
One job lost in one area might mean jobs won by others around the world. While we were shedding 900,000 jobs here, some other people who supply overseas jobs worldwide are deploying workers at the rate of 2,700 per day or a million a year in over 160 countries all over the world.
If I'm a country I won't employ foreigners to work for me if my own people can handle all the jobs. Sure I'm fulfilling my needs not only now but also for next year and the future or else why bother at all getting other people?
Maybe I've discovered a predictor of things to come: —- whenever these overseas workers increase deployment in one year (like this year 2001) the stock market goes up the following year.
I did a post a while back but here's a press release to summarize what is happening elsewhere around the globe. I don't have info for other people like India, Pakistan and China who also supply work forces worldwide and I would be very thankful if some people here could give info about them: —-
More OFWs deployed in Jan-July 2001 September 16, 2001
The exodus of Filipino workers to other nations continued steadily in July, resulting in the deployment of 538,509 workers in the first seven months of 2001, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported today. The figure, DOLE said, exceeded by 1.89%, or by nearly 10,000, the 528,543 Filipinos deployed overseas in the same period last year.
Labor Undersecretary Manuel G. Imson said the July overseas employment totaled 71,845, or averaged 2,400 daily more or less. "No local industry can generate as many jobs that can employ so many trained but jobless Filipino workers," Labor Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas said of the continuing outflow of Filipino workers. According to the DOLE, the continued deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is being spurred by the skills, adaptability and the ability to communicate of Filipino workers.
The DOLE said that with the over half a million OFWs already hired or re-hired in 2001, the total deployment could hit, if not exceed, one million level by the yearend.
"That is the DOLE's commitment to the employment program of President Arroyo," Imson said. Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) figures show that the deployment of land-based workers from January to July 2001 rose by 2.01% (+8,273) to 420,103 from 411,830. Deployment of sea-based workers, on the other hand, also increased by 1.45% (+1,693) to 118,406 in 2001's first seven months from 116,713 last year. POEA said the 538,509 OFWs were deployed in over 160 countries in Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, Europe, the Pacific, and other areas.
The top 10 destinations chosen by Filipino workers in the first seven months of the year were Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Japan, UAE, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, Kuwait, Brunei, and the United Kingdom, the DOLE agency said. But deployment gains were also posted in other destinations not within the top 10 bracket, the POEA said.
Due to demand for nurses and other skilled Filipinos, deployment to the Republic of Ireland remarkably increased by 486% to 2,123 in 2001's first seven months from only 362 last year.
The legal, documented deployment of skilled Filipino workers also registered significant increases in Canada, Israel, Qatar, Syria, Thailand, the United States, and other destinations, DOLE added. Thus, total documented deployment from January to July 2001 reached 1,976 in Canada; 2,942 in Israel; 6,471 in Qatar; 1,380 in Syria; 1,598 in Thailand; and 3,005 in the US, DOLE said. |
