A few years back I read The Great Reckoning, ostensibly an investment book, but one with a broad scope. One of its themes is that throughout history the balance of military power has shifted at times, sometimes giving overwhelming power to empires or nation-states, at other times favoring individuals or small groups. The authors believed that we were entering a period where technology would give great power to small groups. Bin Laden and al Qaeda are fulfilling that prediction.

Our old casual indifference to security is now as outdated as curtain walls on castles became once cannon showed up.

We are going to have to disperse what sustains us, so that there are no good concentrated targets for our enemies- many of whom certainly live among us, a consequence of our Panglossian immigration policies since the 70's.

If the government has any sense they will disperse themselves throughout the country. It's time to take advantage of what the internet offers, the ability not to be tied to geography. As long as Washington DC is where government is concentrated, terrorists have a much easier job. Let DC be a city of monuments and museums. Spread the government, as well as vital industry, throughout the country.
