Interesting thought. Reveals more about you than the intent behind issuing the warning.

A vague warning does not make anyone look good. If something bad happens there will be recriminations. If nothing happens some will demand to know why the nation was being scared with warnings that one could do nothing about, anyway.

The only way a win results is if some are caught in the act or obvious preparations.

Could the purpose of such be ...
It's hard to know what purpose is served by such a vague warning. I'm reminded of the old bumper sticker "Be Alert! - The country needs more lerts".

My niece and her boyfriend both work at a highrise office complex. Every day, sometimes twice, they get bomb threats. No bomb has been found but high alert status means that the building is evacuated for each threat. Chances are these threats are called in by someone who wants to get into work an hour late without missing anything, but terrorists could easily learn to "jerk our chains" causing stress and productivity losses.

That's the first thing that came to my mind.

I'm thinking these warnings are happening for several reasons. One is all the criticism of the FBI and other agencies who may or may not have paid sufficient attention to warnings before 9-11. The high degree of secrecy demands some information even if it is vague.

The generation of MTV-victim mentality is short on attention and long on blame.;)

What still pisses me off is why the airlines weren't simply told that their planes would not fly without a "secure" cockpit door and why affected parties like pilots and passengers continued to be a little too patient for this to happen.
