In his third open letter since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Saddam said the U.S. was pushing the world toward a deep pit from which it won't not leave until "that pit is filled with blood and tragedies." "The world needs to abort the United States' aggressive schemes, including its aggression on the Afghan people, which must be stopped," said the letter that Saddam addressed to the people and governments of the U.S. and the West. Saddam, one of the U.S.' most ardent foes, said the West has failed to assess the reasons behind the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington. U.S. foreign policy was to blame, he said. "Injustice and the pressure that results from it (U.S. policy) on people leads to explosions (and) the events of September 11 should be seen on this basis," Saddam said. Many Arabs and Muslims oppose the U.S., criticizing it for its perceived bias toward Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians, and most recently for its attacks on Afghanistan. U.S. attacks were launched Oct. 7 against Afghanistan's Taliban rulers and the Afghanistan-based al-Qaida network of Osama bin Laden, who the U.S. believes orchestrated the Sep. 11 attacks. On Tuesday, a newspaper owned by Saddam's son Odai Hussein predicted that the U.S. would attack Iraq by the year's end. "Bush, the son" will try to settle the unfinished business left by his father who was not able to overthrow Iraq's government during the 1991 Gulf War, Babil wrote in a front-page editorial, referring to current U.S. President George W. Bush and his father, former President George Bush. A U.S.-led coalition bombarded Iraqi forces in 1991 in retaliation for Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
