A madman is someone who consistently takes action against his own interests. My belief is that a person who pursues a life devoted to revenge is ultimately acting against their own interests. Imagine what would have happened if, after the gulf war, Saddam had decided to give up on weapons of mass destruction, given up on sponsoring terrorism, given up on being a treacherous snake, and decided instead to devote the rest of his life to adopting constructive policies. (Sort of like Iraq would have been if Jordan's King Hussein had been running it.) I guess Saddam is a hero to some people, but my take is that if he had followed the course I have suggested he would be a hero to the whole world.
