Cisco's revenues in 1995, when Chambers became President and CEO, were $2.2 billion

Well he worked his way up from 1994 and was promoted based on his significant contribution for bringing revenue to that level in 1995. Previous CEO thought so and so did the board of directors. The rest is history. The only high tech company on earth that bought engineering talent for cheap and turned into multi million dollars in sale. Mr. Chambers was the first to implement that strategy. Others tried but failed miserably. Another feather in Mr. Chambers' cap.
