No he means EBITDA, cash flow or some other parameter which is not the bottom line, but potentially equally valuable.

Actually, Intel only earned $106 million in 3Q01, after restructuring charges, not $787 million. Since Paul keeps using AMD's loss of $189 million after charges to shut down two older fabs, we need to keep him honest to use Intel's corresponding number. The additional $295 million of profit shows how well they did with their additional $5.7 billion in revenues.

"For the quarter ended in September, Intel reported net income of $106 million, or 2 cents a share, on revenue of $6.5 billion. During the same quarter last year, net income was $2.5 billion, or 36 cents a share, on revenue of $8.7 billion.

Excluding restructuring charges, pro forma net income was $655 million, or 10 cents a share. During the same quarter last year, pro forma net income was $2.9 billion, or 41 cents a share"

Let's see, revenues were down $2.5 billion from last year and net income was down $2.394 billion from last year. I think I see a correlation here.

As far as spendable income, if their stockholder's equity decreased by $4 billion, that is their decrease in spendable income, as you need to include the effect on current and retained earnings.

Now THAT is GAAP accounting.

NG, Intel's "spendable income" over the first 3 quarters of 2001 is MINUS $1.4 BILLION or even worse. Because that is how much their book value dropped. If I, as an individual find that my Net Worth went down $10,000 over the last 9 months, I would be concerned, because it means that my expenses exceeded my income by $10,000.

And this huge drop in Net Worth of Intel Corporation occurred despite the fact that they claim that their "Plant & Equipment" is now worth $3.1 BILLION or 20% more than 9 months ago! Unless, Intel wants to sell their fabs, "Property, Plant & Equipment" are not "spendable" assets. So, their spendable assets dropped $4.5 BILLION in 9 months

BTW, AMD's book value increased by $0.52 BILLION over the same period, an increase of 14%. They only increased the value of PP&E on the books by $79 million or 3%. AMD's spendable assets rose by $0.44 BILLION during the same time period that Intel's dropped by $4.5 BILLION.

Intel's "net income" is illusory. What matters is, is your bank account rising or falling? AMD's is rising, Intel's is falling BIG TIME.
