That's not quite true. Every outrageous executive compensation award raises the bar for everybody else. So, the board at the company I DO own will hire a compensation consultant to help it decide what is fair for it's CEO, and the consultant will be looking at what others get. Boards usually look to pay their CEO in the top 25% of peers, so there is a ratchet-up effect.
