you seemed to imply that the British rule was a blessing for India....

HG... I didn't make any such subjective statement...

Who knows... had not Britain been the pre-eminent power in the region, the French would have taken their place and done a better job (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, snicker, snicker)..

Or one of the warring powers on the Indian continent might have managed to conquer their foes, and unifying all of India, and managed to establish a homegrown cultural revolution which would have exceeded the modernization the British provided...

Or they might still be a group of individual nation states warring between one another....

None of which would necessarily have proven to be a "blessing" for the average Indian living there.
