Hitachi forecasts $1.9 billion loss this fiscal year

Hitachi Ltd. Tuesday reported a net loss of $929 million (110.5 billion yen) for the first half ended Sept. 30, compared with a $501 million net profit for the same period a year ago.

The company forecast that its net loss for the full fiscal year ending next March 31 will be $1.9 billion.

Sales for the half totaled $33.09 billion, down 2% from the year-ago period. Hitachi predicted full fiscal year sales would reach $66.39 billion.

In a breakdown by business segments, the electron devices group had an operating loss of $613 million in the half, compared with an operating profit of $745 million for the first fiscal half of 2000. Electron devices sales totaled $6.43 billion for the half, down from $8.5 billion for the same period a year ago.

Information and Telecommunications group had an operating profit of $123 million, up from $103 million for the same period a year ago. Sales for the half were $7.34 billion, up from $7 billion for the year-ago half.

Digital Media and consumer had operating loss of $51 million, compared with an operating profit of $3 million for the first half of 2000. Sales were $4.89 billion, up from $4.27 billion a year ago.
