To: Michael Do who wrote (62338 ) 10/30/2001 5:57:56 PM From: dybdahl Respond to of 74651 If I may cite the agenda for one of the major parties (SF) in Denmark, which isn't so different from many other parties with similar attitudes around Europe. This is a translations, as precise as possible, and I must again point out, that I (of course) strongly disagree with this party:
- Shut down NATO.
- Make all former NATO countries remove any weapons capable for use in attacking other countries.
- The superpowers USA and EU are focused on keeping 3rd world countries as poor as possible and do not hesitate to use weapons to achieve that goal. This was clearly illustrated in the Gulf war.
- We must fight the world order, which has USA in front and uses technological power and economic growth as the purpose of everything.
This party got 7.6% of the votes at last election. The basic idea is, if you can blame somebody far away (like the USA), do it. A common enemy makes politics easier to sell.
The situation in Europe has gotten better after the wall broke. Before that, the big German SPD (the governing Gerhard Schröder is from SPD), which had approx.35-45% of the votes, wanted to make western europe a demilitarized place in order to show the communists how peaceful we were, and USA was the aggressor because they wanted to put up missiles in western Europe.
USA has also been accused of many other things, like:
- supporting dictators like Saddam Hussein
(before the Gulf war) - getting Iraq out of Kuwait but doing nothing against the dictatorship in Saudi-Arabia.
- supporting Israel with money and weapons
- not supporting ANC in South-Africa in their fight for freedom with sanctions when they wanted it.
- pushing hormone beef to Europe even though we don't want to have it (trade wars)
- setting out genetically modified plants in nature
Again I want to point out that these are not my accusations or opinions, they are just random issues in European politics.
Many pro-American politicians have used the WTC attack to convince the population that USA is our closest friend, and the message seems to get through, although there was one danish person of palestinian origin, who was interviewed september 12th, who repeatedly said that "USA deserved this". I personally know one extremely good all-danish programmer who has the same opinion, and he would never say that in public.
To many people over here, EU is also an enemy.
You did not repeat me when you claimed that I considered USA as an enemy, and I cannot see your claim that I should be proud of socialism, as anything else than another insult. If it isn't please point out the source of your information. I'm a member of the danish liberal party and don't consider Socialism anything else than a religion with disastrous consequences.
