First, Fernandes said he was confident that Pakistan would not allow terrorists to get hold of its nuclear weapons. "I would give them credit (for) being people capable of handling their nuclear assets," Fernandes said at a seminar on global terrorism here. Second, Fernandes said the US tactic of cashing in on obligations accumulated during its close relationship with Pakistan could create civil and military disturbances in Pakistan. "This should be a cause of concern not only for the (Pakistan) leadership, but also for India. Any break-up of Pakistan will jeopardise the stability of the sub-continent." Third, Fernandes said the Indian armed forces had till date "scrupulously" avoided destroying terrorist training camps "not far from India’s border" since most of them were close to civilian areas. Fernandes, however, warned: "One should not rule out the likelihood of India having to fight its own war against terrorism once the US-led alliance calls off its engagement with Afghanistan, and goes back to its cosy relationship with Pakistan."
