Indications are that AMD is completely sold out of Athlons and that a shortage situation is developing - which would be very bad from a reliable-supplier standpoint.

So they appear to be trying to moderate demand by keeping prices high.

An unavoidable side-effect is the rapidly rising ASPs that AMD will just have to somehow accommodate.
