Acer Inc. is expected to generate revenues of NT$70 billion

China Post via NewsEdge Corporation : 10/29/2001
Acer Inc. is expected to generate revenues of NT$70 billion to NT$80 billion this year as orders from the Middle East surge after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to J.T. Wang, president of Acer Inc.
Revenues in the fourth quarter are predicted to grow by 25 percent as buyers in the Middle East switch orders from U.S. PC vendors to non-U.S. brands.
Wang said that Acer's brand sales would break even or register a small profit after operation results were confirmed at a meeting of Acer's top overseas office executives. He went on to say that this would be the first time the company's brand business would not post a loss since the company changed its name from Multitech to Acer in 1987.
Acer's business in Europe, the U.S. and Asia hasn't been affected by the Sept. 11 attacks, Wang said.
The company's current strength is that it could provide Pentium 4 PCs in large quantities, after the war in Afghanistan is over and so has increased its level of safety inventory to two to three weeks.
He also stated that forecast of the company's sales performance would be a slight loss or may creep into profit.
J.T. Wang, who is also the head of Acer Sertek, stated that Acer would move from being a product-oriented manufacturer to a service solution provider by integrating Acer Inc., Acer Cyber Center Service Inc., Pacific-Acer Global Information Corp., and Acer Internet.
According to industry analysts from Jihsun Securities Investemts, Acer's transformation to a service-oriented company will probably not generate immediate benefits for the company.
The integration of the Acer affiliated companies would bolster the total capital of the new Acer Inc., making it more difficult to generate higher earnings per share.
According to a top Acer Sertek executive, at next week's board meeting Acer Sertek might lower its financial targets for the fourth quarter.
Pre-tax profits totalled NT$362 million in the first half of this year, which was only 34.8 percent of the original estimate.
Most of Acer's current profits were generated by the selling of shares of Taiwan Cellular Corp., Ambit Microsystems Corp., and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

RE: "During the Web cast, Barrett insisted that the company would meet its previously-stated plan to spend $7.5 billion in terms of capital expenditures for 2001."

Just so there's absolutely no confusion on this issue, I think Barrett should schedule another webcast next month and give us all an update on that 2001 capex number!

Geez, I'm now wondering if we'll be reading about this next year. I can see it in print now: "...and Barrett insisted that last year the company met plans to spend $7.5 billion on capex..."
