A regular government survey of Korean e-commerce found the value of sales online during August totaled 272.2 billion won ($209.87 million). This was an 18.8 billion won ($14.49 million) backtrack on the prior month's sales. There's certainly no lack of choice for Korea's Internet users. The Korea National Statistics Office's Cyber Shopping Mall Survey counted 2,032 business-to-consumer e-commerce sites at the end of August. But growth in e-tail sites has slowed, with August seeing a net addition of only six establishments over the previous month. The survey found Korea's online sales now account for nearly 1.8 percent of the country's total retail trade sales. While down slightly on July, this is still up on August 2000 when Internet shopping only represented 1.1 percent of all retail sales. Computer and computer-related appliances are still the hottest online products in Korea, making up 23.7 percent of all online sales in August. However, the value of sales of computer and computer-related appliances plunged by 13.18 billion won ($10.16 million) between July and August. In August last year the sector made up almost 45 percent of sales. Products that have grown their share of sales online since last year include home electronic and telecommunications appliances - which have doubled their share of e-sales to over 20 percent - household goods, motor vehicle accessories, and clothes.
