Ajami is the favorite Middle East expert of most American foreign policy types, because he combines deep and authentic regional expertise with a strikingly pro-American and even pro-Israeli perspective. Other Arabs, of course, along with some Arabists and anti-Zionist types, have the opposite opinion, and consider him a kind of "Uncle Abdul" who just sucks up to dominant U.S. power circles. Me, I'm in the first camp.
