During WWI and WWII, US companies paid royalties on German patents to the Alien Property Custodian, but the funds were subject to seizure by interested parties. I can't say that I am familiar with the details but I have studied the events. I.G. Farben is one of the big names that comes to mind. They wound up having to pay quite a bit in reparations to slave laborers after the war. I believe that this was one of the things that led to the formation of multi-national corporations. The intersection between corporations and governments drives the conspiracy theorists wild, so this is a tough area to study.
