Indonesia to freeze terrorists' assets, accounts

JAKARTA, Oct 31 (AFP) -
The Indonesian government will freeze any assets proved to be owned by terrorist groups in the country, a report said Wednesday.

Information Minister Syamsul Muarif, quoted by the Koran Tempo daily, said the State Intelligence Agency was studying a list from overseas of suspected terrorist groups.

The move was in line with Indonesia's commitment to fight terrorism and support the UN resolution on terrorism, he said.

Muarif said the government would work with the central bank, Bank Indonesia. "But there should be strong enough evidence before an account can be frozen."

Any action would be in line with existing laws which state that an account can only be frozen if a suspect has been named.

Indonesia is also preparing a new anti-terrorist law which is expected to be submitted to the legislature by the end of the year.

President Megawati Sukarnoputri condemned the September 11 attacks in the United States. But she has also criticized Washington over its strikes on Afghanistan, where the chief suspect Osama bin Laden is believed to be hiding.
