From Info Mine:

Global expenditures on mineral exploration have fallen for the fourth straight year, according to the Financial Times. A study by the Metals Economics Group (MEG) estimates that global exploration spending will be approximately US$2.2 billion during 2001, a 15% drop from 2000 spending levels, and a 58% drop from 1997 levels, when exploration expenditures peaked at US$5.2 billion. The MEG study forecast that exploration spending will continue to fall for several years to come, primarily due to the decreasing number of mining and exploration companies. The most popular region for exploration remains Latin America, capturing 29% of the total exploration expenditures. The largest decreases in spending were in North America and Southeast Asia, due to stronger environmental legislation in North America and continuing civil unrest in Southeast Asia related to anti-mining sentiment.
