Instead the "feeling it in my bones" metaphor, I prefer a computer analogy. One program subroutine in my mind thought an all out nuclear war was a sure thing. Another one "knew" it was impossible. Which one or either dominated my conscious thoughts varied, varies, from day to day. I even read a big chunk of Herman Cohen's "On Thermonuclear War" when I was a teenager. I just didn't feel in my bones that it would come to that, so I did not brood on it in a personal way much.......
