Cary,
I think peace treaties must be signed by all parties--israel, palestine, syria, saudis and recognition is the cornerstone. US/Nato hopefully will be a 5 year plan and hopefully by the time they pullout the conditions on the ground will be much better. Israel/Palestine trade, Israel/syria tourism. Dont laught thats exactly what happened after sadat/begin.
This current situation is untenable. I think my plan takes all interests into account. mike

Cary,

I agree 100% with what you have said here. Clinton applied all the pressure that an American president can, he spent much of his last year working on a reasonable settlement.
Barak made many concessions and made a reasonable settlement offer to Arafat. But the reality is that Arab sentiment is that Israel does not have a right to exist. It take two parties to make peace and the Arabs don't want peace with Israel. They want to eliminate Israel.

As far as US foreign policy, as far as I can tell out policy has been very accomidating to the Arab world for the past ten years. All of the US military interventions were to protect a Muslin country, Kuwait, Somalia, Bosnia, Albanians in Kosova. Clinton pressured Israel real hard to made a peace settlement with the Palestinians.

And Sept. 11th is the thanks that we get from the Arab world.
