re: Siemens on Cingular Move to 3G EDGE >> Cingular Wireless Chooses Siemens to Build US Mobile Network First 3G agreement in the USA for Siemens Cingular Wireless, the second largest US wireless carrier, has chosen Siemens as one of its partners to build its third generation (3G) mobile network. The company announced today that it will upgrade its mobile network to the EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) 3G standard. In addition to providing mobile network infrastructure, Siemens has also been asked to supply GSM/TDMA dual-technology mobile phones that allow users to make calls in both types of network. Cingular will begin the build-out of its 3G network by installing GSM (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) for transmitting voice and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) for transmitting mobile data over its existing TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and analog networks. "In Europe and Asia we have over 150 GSM customers, and we are one of the top three mobile equipment suppliers worldwide for GSM, GPRS and UMTS", says Rudi Lamprecht, member of the Board of Siemens AG. "This gives us a head start for establishing ourselves as one of the major players in the North American market." Siemens underlined its leadership in the telecommunications industry by conducting its first live demonstration of EDGE in North America during Cingular's announcement in New York City. Siemens will provide support to Cingular in converting its existing networks to 3G mobile technology. Today, GSM is the leading mobile standard with over 590 million customers, representing a share of 70% in the digital mobile network field. Siemens has given Cingular the assurance of many years of support and will supply a significant amount of GSM/GPRS/EDGE network infrastructure which will operate in the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz spectrum. The agreement will also ensure that Cingular's customers can use the new GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks as well as roam on the existing TDMA networks in North and South America while using a single mobile phone. The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio includes the complete range of GSM, GPRS and UMTS mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services. Applications cover mobile services for Unified Messaging, Location Based Services and Mobile Payment. For the fiscal year 2000 (which ended September 30, 2000), IC Mobile recorded sales of EUR 9 billion and EBIT of EUR 758 million. The group employs 29,840 employees worldwide. (March 31, 2001).
