Why is GSM/GPRS/EDGE so difficult??

You are asking the wrong person....I was in the camp that thought GPRS wasnt going to be that difficult.

How long a period of time was there between the first working prototype of a GPRS handset and commercial availability? If the same lag occurs for EDGE, it is going to be a long wait for Cingular.

It seems like we have another date for the availability of GAIT handsets....March '02. It does surprise me that these are supposed to be availble prior to GSM850 handsets. It will have taken two years between AWE's announcement and the first commercial availability in the second half of next year. That seems like quite a bit of time just to add a single band....perhaps AWE is moving slowly in their build-out of 800MHz.
