I have a clear recollection of from the slideshow that could be downloaded as a PDF. It included what looked like a catalogue photo of the 193nm stepper they were testing in one slide, and a photomicrograph of a 50nm gate in another slide. Maybe someone else remembers more.

I'm sure AMD is experimenting with 193nm just as I'm sure Intel has been experimenting with Intel for some time as well. The question isn't "have they been playing with it," the question is "is 193nm robust and commercially viable." I would tend to say no on both counts... but then again, AMD is willing to pay 4X the wafer cost for SOI. If you're desperate for performance, you have to pay the premium...

My recollection is that when AMD announced the delay of their .13 process, they said that they had concluded that they needed 193nm steppers to make the move to .13 worthwhile.

I follow process technology closely and I've never heard anything like that from AMD. I could have missed something, but most likely only if it got exceptionally limited press.
