The secret of self interest is to promote other's interests, because if they get wealthier, then so will you, but if you pursue your interest to the detriment of others, they will get poorer, and so will you. Equivalently, if you do a net nothing, then the common good is benefited a net of nothing with respect to your contribution. So the best way to proceed is to move in a direction which benefits you and others.

This is how I grew my business. I concentrated on making sure my clients got the best job they could get and they made money from the work I did for them. I never did something that would sabotage their business long term even if it seemed like the expedient or inexpensive way to go in the short term. I had to concentrate my effort there because they weren't, they were wrapped up in short term goals, putting out fires. I had to fight a lot of battles with them to pursue this tact. Eventually it made my services invaluable to them and as their businesses grew, mine grew along with their's.

This was something akin to revolutionary back when I started my lab business. The general mistrust between labs and their customers was high. There was the attitude that the lab wanted to charge whatever they could get away with and the customer wanted the world without paying for it regardless what was in the best interest of either. Even in the physical plant I did things differently. I didn't have a counter between me and the customer. It was largely symbolic but it worked. The biggest problem my customers had with their labs was the fact that the person helping them is on the other side of that counter. Now it is generally accepted that you have to run a service business this way, in the interest of your customers and remove the barriers between your biz and theirs, their interest and yours.

In this statement, you've expressed something I consider slowly being understood by America- witness works such as 'Balanced Scorecard' which extend a corporate entities interests beyond mere financial statements to the welfare of it's clients, workers, and communities.

This is the essence of the synergy realized by corporations, and why it is wise to promote the formation and welfare of corporations, perhaps even over the interests of individuals. This is phenomenon is proceeding whether anyone likes it or not. It is manifest destiny or a more efficient way of societal evolution.

It is that vision of evolution that I've attempted to embrace, though with a very murky crystal ball. Unfortunately, certain groups seem to intend to replace this outcome with martial law, a black and silver studded world with less freedom, less for all...
