re: I know you're a nice guy, Dan.
I know you are a nice guy, John, and I do not know accounting at all but I decided to try to follow this particular thread few notes back. One thing that I found amazing is your statement that amd either overproduced or had overcapacity for k7s.
Back it with the facts and show that intel is better
The other thing that was amazing is your statement about amd generating profit when intel is not able to satisfy demand. Now, even though that I do not hold MBA :-)), I did find it curious that intel profits are highly correlated with amd's at that. :-))
I decided not to follow any farther but it seems to me that if you are so incredibly biased it should occur to you that insults may not be needed and maybe, just maybe, there is some grain of truth in Dan's statements.

Re: Honestly, and I really don't mean to offend here...

Nice, artfull, dodge - well done!

Being a little more specific would be helpful.

Intel has about $12 Billion less left than it should after a period in which every company in the industry was making money hand over foot. Another year, or so, of this, and Intel will have reported 4 more quarters of good earnings, will have FABs listed on its books as worth $35 Billion, and $10 Billion in goodwill, but will have to sell bonds to make payroll.

I just got to Dan's post that you are talking about. While actual numbers may or may not be accurate Dan, IMHO, made a good point on overcapacity. Instead of addressing the main issue of overcapacity in general you became defensive about 50mil mark. AMD sells ~30 million chips currently. Considering that amd is moving to hammer which is larger and .13 soi process yields are not proven yet we may see an actual unit reduction on amds part. The new amd fab delayed indefinitely.
Intel, OTOH, is building capacity like crazy
