Air interfaces are simple, packet protocols can be tough.

I think I am going to take a wait and see attitude on EDGE. AWE has stated that EDGE is part of their development plan but part of the Docomo investment mandated that AWE would need to move to W-CDMA in more than a handful of markets by June '04. This doesnt give much of a window for EDGE to be deployed. Cingular will need the Latin American operators to move to EDGE to create a mass market. I am sure SBC is applying a signifcant amount of pressure to convince BLS to move their Latin American properties to GSM/EDGE instead of 1x.

Perhaps Cingular believes that EDGE will be deployed in the 3G bands in Europe....that would obviously change the situation dramatically.

March 02 is just like around the corner, no??

Yes...but so is the end of '01, which was the latest in a string of dates that were promised for GAIT handsets.
