They're actually -halving- the price of the upgrade if you own the previous version, not -doubling- it if you don't. Imagine if they halved the price of a car because you owned the previous model year?

Dave,

How is Mac different from MSFT in this respect? Aren't 6 or 7 year old OS's pretty much out of date and in need of replacement anyway?

MSFT and other application developers can't keep supporting an old OS forever. It's hard to find parts for very old cars as well.
