I don't think some people can risk NOT shorting. What's the difference? Sell high, buy low. Is there no risk in buying a stock at 14 and knowing it is going to the single digits? That is foolishness. There is no more risk in shorting than going long. The only risk is buying in a bear market of a stock that is unloved on the way down. There are people on this board who have held on from 50! lost 70% and more! That is risky. Looking for a 300% gain to break even.
