I use an adaptec IDE RAID controller - it will move over 100MB per second - about 100 times faster than 802.11b... not sluggish at all.

Yes, well, the controller isn't the problem. I run Ultra 320 SCSI with the fastest SCSI hard drives currently available. It still takes a certain amount of time to copy 100MB of data (since the drive (even at 4.5ms), not the controller, is the bottleneck).

But the point is that no matter how fast the network is, you'll load it up moving large files around. Obviously, 11mbps is slower than 100; but for 99.9999% of home use other than moving those large A/V files around, it is more than adequate. If you're moving 100 or 500MB files, you're going to find even Gigabit is too slow. For example, copying an 85MB file on my system still takes 15 seconds or so.
