Bin Laden 'wants Taliban-type states across Arab world'

Tony Blair says Osama bin Laden wants to create Taliban-type states all over the Arab and Muslim world.
He says bin Laden is trying to widen the gulf of misunderstanding between the Arab and Muslim world and the West.

Speaking at a press conference with Yasser Arafat in the Gaza strip, he also likened the Middle East to Northern Ireland.

Mr Blair says people should witness the poverty, oppression of women and appalling living conditions in Taliban-controlled areas.

"That's what bin Laden wants to put into every Arab and Muslim country," he said.

He says the cycle of bloodshed in the Middle East needs to stop, allowing people to talk. He likened the situation to events in Northern Ireland.

Mr Blair said: "We have a peace process in Northern Ireland. In the 1970s, bombs were going off on mainland Britain.

"The British naturally reacted with tremendous force in that situation.

"The bloodshed went on (and) 20 years later, finally people have understood we have talk to each other."

Mr Arafat thanked the Prime Minister for his support in trying to push the peace process forward.
