Sun, Compaq, SGI get good server news Oct 31, 2001 1:28 PM PT The economy may be down, but some customers are still buying servers from major hardware companies. Shaw Communications is buying midrange servers and storage systems valued at $50 million from Sun Microsystems, along with professional services for a data center used in its cable TV, satellite and Internet service provider business. High-end computer maker SGI sold the National Imagery and Mapping Agency its Origin 2000 servers with hundreds of processors for use in the agency's National Information Library, expected to house 25 million images in 6,600 terabytes of storage for the Defense Department and intelligence agencies. And Worldspan, which sells information and Internet services to more than 20,000 travel agencies, has signed a three-year agreement for Compaq Proliant servers as well as other products and services. --Stephen Shankland, Special to ZDNet News
