Story 9547 =WSJ: Amazon -2: 2nd Electronics Head To Quit In Last Year

By Nick Wingfield

Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--The executive in charge of Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) electronics business has left the company, the second head of the money-losing division to resign from the Internet retailer in less than a year.

Carl Gish, who was vice president of the electronics group at Seattle-based Amazon, left the company in mid-October to join the Zyman Marketing Group, a strategic marketing consulting firm based in Atlanta led by Sergio Zyman, the former chief marketing officer for Coca-Cola Co. (KO) Gish said he will be relocating from Seattle to start up Zyman's New York office.

(This report and related background will be available at the Journal's Web site, WSJ.com.)

Amazon's electronics division is the source of controversy among Wall Street analysts who have questioned the company's ability to generate profits from the sale of television sets, DVD players, handheld computers and other gadgets. Amazon's electronics, tools and kitchen division had an operating loss of $33 million on revenue of $103 million in the third quarter. The company's total revenue was $639 million during the period.

Earlier this year, Gish took over Amazon's top electronics position after Christopher Payne, the previous head of the group left the company. Payne later joined Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).

Amazon spokeswoman Patty Smith said Gish left on positive terms with the company and that his departure doesn't reflect any dissatisfaction with Amazon's electronics group.

"We wish Carl the best and we're sorry to see him go," said Smith.

Eric Broussard, who was the vice president for kitchen, tools, outdoor living and toys at Amazon, will now be taking over management of the electronics group, Smith said. The electronics group at Amazon includes consumer electronics, photo processing, cellular phones, software, computers and video games.

In an interview, Gish said he was ready for a change after three-and-a-half years at Amazon and that he wanted to be closer to his family on the East Coast.

"What I wanted to do next is get back into much more of a consumer marketing focus," he said. "This makes a lot of sense for me."

Gish said he believes Amazon's electronics group is doing well.

"I think we made some really great progress in the couple of years that we had been in business in terms of growing revenue and also pushing towards profitability," he said. He said his departure coupled with Payne's earlier this year was a coincidence.
