One thing that is somewhat overlooked is that the Military looks on the President as the CIC and does not question his lawful orders or indeed the lawful orders all the way down the chain of command. If citizens identify more with the military in time of war it is only natural they would be more supportive and less critical in hopes of assuring the lives and success of the soldier. No, they don't give up their vote but they do give up elements of their freedom of speech, ironically to guarantee it to the rest of us.

If comments are business as usual and partisan it is natural for people solidly behind our military to view them as non-supportive. Yes, things are more black and white in times of conflict and life and death matters.
