Don you ask that question because you don't understand where the SGI products fit. You also don't understand the the NT Ricky path cost SGI all kinds of momentum and that lead into the cisco rape of the substrate supply and then the bubble was over. You very simplistic analysis just shows no understanding of what the market was and how the forces played. You also may not understand that when the iron is in the fire the DOD buys what is knows will work and does not worry about extracting the cheapest price. Or another way of thinking about it is that when the iron is in the fire the DOD does it right and does not fool around with second best to save a few pennies.

The iron is in the fire and the SGI does it right. Also SGI has the depth of DOD certified folks that is very deep and wide for a commercial company like SGI. This is another competitive advantage over companies that focused much more on the so called internet bubble of products and ignored DOD and specialty science.

HP, Compaq do not have the equivalent of a Federal Systems Division. IBM may also not have such a focused and coherent group that is in many places that are to be funded.
