However, the Austin-based research firm said it has lowered its four-year forecast for flat-panel display growth because of weakness in mobile phones and price erosion in large panel displays. DisplaySearch now predicts that flat-panel display revenues will reach $49.3 billion in 2005, which would be a compound annual growth rate of 21% from $22.5 billion 2001. "The 2005 forecast is significantly below our previous forecast, as the outlook for mobile phones has been radically reduced and the effects of the price reductions on large panels are fully absorbed," said Barry Young, vice president at DisplaySearch. "However, the outlook for this segment remains strong as FPDs become an essential part of our daily lives in mobile phones, PDAs, LCD monitors, TVs, automotive monitors and a wide range of other applications." The outlook for flat-panel displays is a mixed bag. DisplaySearch's new forecast shows flat-panel displays for mobile phones growing 33% in 2001, but dropping 2.2% in 2002. The notebook PC displays are expected to drop 42.3% in 2001 but rebound 13.9% in 2002. Flat-panel displays for desktop monitors are now expected to grow 8.5% in 2001, followed by a 21.8% increase in 2002, said DisplaySearch this week. The overall drop in flat-panel display revenues this year was attributed to a 14.3% decline in revenues for thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays, and a 6% fall in passive-matrix LCDs. The sale of plasma display panels (PDP) will grow 122.2% this year, fueled by plasma TV applications, according to the new forecast.
