patron there are plenty of investments that will likely outperform the US treasuries for a myriad of reasons and I don't argue with your proposed scenario. Your original premise, however, was the lack of safety of the treasury and I take issue. Your dollars may come back inflated but they will come back. You may fare better with timberland LPs or REITs but the relative safety of a treasury note remains compelling to many. There isn't an LP nor a REIT that I would bet my last dollar on...Not true with a treasury note. We can all second guess the wisdom of monetary expansion and third world bailouts, but, let's not confuse performance with safety.
