'bout 4pm, Mike sez 'gettin late...want to stay the night and go back up rte 1 in the mornin'...As our habit, me and the 2 traveled together in a mighty mite..no shotgun or cover..stupid.. We made a bad choice to go back that night...we got home, but missed out on the entertainment...Tom got a Silver Star that night...VC hit the engineers for the left jab and tried to sucker punch Tom in his bunker for the right cross...neva' happen... Re: Bragg, you may have been there to opfor us during the field exercise..it ran 2-3 weeks? I can't remember...that would have been the spring of '67. I was in the gym at Carthage in Carthage County...remember we ran the ex over 5 counties...Your SF classes were the spooks and we had a troop from the 82nd to operate with...Well, one sfo student was from a farm in the county, and as luck would have it, one of the 82nd boys lived in the local town...the sfo's planned a night air delivery resupply near an sfo dad's barn...dad brags about it down at the domino parlor or whatever in Carthage, or whereever...82nd boy's dad just said hmmm, and we were in the treeline and scarfed up an A team and their supplies...Turned out the team had stayed in dad's barn for three nights...team leader got busted out of the program for that one...82nd boys had them handcuffed over the pipes down in the gym basement...they played for keeps...all I can say is you guys know how to train...I just wish I had gone BEFORE I went to nam the first time...AND, I was thankful I was a Marine and not an sfo! You won't find any argument from me...you were the toughest 12 guys this side of Jerusalem...You deserve the very best in support...not to be rushed in so we can feel good we are doing somthin...brave and talented kids deserve brave and talented leadership...from the top down...nite, Unk.
