I suspect that most of these polls exhibit more hindsight than foresight. However, I agree that in a recession the rich are able to take advantage of distressed prices in just about anything they choose to buy. So for them the opportunities multiply from pawn shops to real estate.

The general public is less interested in acquisitions and more given to protecting their limited assets including their jobs. They will continue to spend but with more prudence. We can expect personal bankruptcies to rise.
