re: TIM 3G in Italy enters operational phase

TIM has advanced from the testing phase to an operative phase

>> NEC and Siemens carry out first Italian 3G Video Transmission

NEC and Siemens have announced the first voice, data and video transmissions in Italy on a real UMTS network. The transmissions were made in Padua, as part of a trial commissioned by TIM last February in order to verify and get experience on 3G mobile communications and services. The new 3G network in Padua is fully connected to TIM's GSM network via Siemens' Core Exchange; voice calls between NEC's UMTS terminals and GSM mobile phones within the TIM network and vice versa are fully functional. Video calls between two NEC UMTS terminals and client-server data transmission are also now possible.

"This experiment shows that video transmission, one of the major UMTS applications, is a reality for TIM," added Mauro Sentinelli, General Manager of Telecom Italia Mobile (Telecom Italia Group). "While our competitors are still testing UMTS on site, TIM is already on-air. In fact, TIM has been testing 3G radio transmissions since 1999. Now TIM has advanced from the testing phase to an operative phase. The fact that TIM, in partnership with two important players such as NEC and Siemens, has reached this important target first, once more demonstrates our technical leadership within the sector." <<
