RAWALPINDI, Nov 1: The government will not allow anybody to force peaceful people to participate in strikes and create law and order situation in the country , said the newly-appointed Punjab Governor Lt-Gen (Rtd) Khalid Maqbool here on Thursday.

He was speaking to a gathering of transporters in front of IRADA drug addicts rehabilitation centre on Jhelum Road in his first public appearance in the twin cities of Islamabad-Rawalpindi after his appointment as Punjab governor.

The meeting was arranged to woo the transporters to keep their vehicles plying on roads on November 9, when the religious parties are planning to hold a wheel-jam strike to protest the US-led coalition strikes on Afghanistan and the government's support to the campaign against terrorism.

Gen Maqbool said the government was ready to hold dialogue with everyone including the religious groups. However, he said, "these people should under no condition expect the government to compromise on its principled stand".

Calling on the people to shun extremism, violence and intolerance, the governor said the government was striving hard to establish a milieu of peace, civility, tolerance and harmony.

He said, he believed in only the pristine form of Islam and did not accept the interpretation offered by the extremist Mullahs.

Gen Maqbool said no one was more Muslim or patriotic than the government and that the army troops were ready to give every sacrifice for the sake of Islam and the country.

He added that the opportunists wanted to benefit from the present situation by playing on people's emotions, which the government was determined to not allow them to do at any cost.

He said the economy was in shambles and at that stage the people could not afford to support the people, who were responsible for Afghan nations predicament.

The world, the governor said, was presenting new opportunities of development and prosperity to Pakistan, which needed to be fully exploited. However, some miscreants, he said, were out to misuse the name of religion for their vested interests.

He assured the gathering that the government's support to the international campaign against terrorism was not for the sake of monetary benefits or any other incentives. "This [support] is based on principles and is part of the entire world's commitment for ending extremism."

He further stated that while extending support to the international coalition national interests and prestige was not compromised at any stage.

The governor claimed that few people were holding the entire nation hostage and that their ideas were not shared by the majority.

He maintained that freedom of expression was everyone's right but no one could be allowed to thrust his beliefs onto others by violent means.

Everyone deciding not to participate in the strike would be given all possible protection and police would be held fully responsible in case anyone is affected by the strikers, Gen Maqbool said.

He also spoke about transporters problems and sensitivities including the issue of franchized transport and vowed to sort out their problems at the earliest.

Earlier District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani said the government was striving hard to solve people's problems in the shortest possible time.

He urged the people to support the government in this hour of trial. He called the people not to fall prey to the opportunists, who want to take political mileage out of the present situation.

APP adds: District Nazims of Rawalpindi Division, representatives of various transporters' organizations, federations and representatives of the business community were also present.

"We have to shun politics of slogans, cordon and fire" (Gherao and Jalao) to save the country, specially during the prevailing situation when Pakistan is passing through crucial stages of the history," he pledged.

Pakistan always condemned terrorism and the decision taken by the government to support international community against terrorism on the basis of principals, he remarked.

After the decision, he said Pakistan was given respect in the comity of the nations and the whole world extended its support to make Pakistan stable economically for bringing peace in this region.
