I see the same sad offspring results in other areas besides liberal academe, too. Among ministers and police, I've known many a screwed up kid. And military brats. Etc. & etc. Quantifying them scientifically requires a look through many variables, including a sampling of the spouses' personalities & beliefs. I've also known racist, wife-abusing cops, heard wacko theories proferred by seemingly intelligent politicians in private, and have even spotted aliens masquerading as businesspeople (I mean, haven't we seen odd theories of budgeting by tech CEOs or listened to the odd rantings of stock analysts?). Likewise, I'd say the majority I've met in the liberal arts world were pragmatic & conscientious. In short, while I see a greater tolerance for wackos in the university environs, the numbers of actual wackos don't seeem to be out of proportion with most other work environs or professions.
