As for how the fourth quarter is shaping up, 586 companies have issued predictions and 279 of those are negative. That number's up from totals for the first three quarters of the year.

"There is no turn around in the fourth quarter or the first quarter [of 2002]," said Perkins. Analysts expect fourth-quarter earnings to drop 16 percent from a year ago, a big turnaround from the 8.2 percent increase they expected a month ago

Hmmm..expectations have come way down. now the question is has the market priced in that fact?
