I'm using preinstalled XP Home Edition so NTFS is my file system. I'd convert to FAT32 but am not sure I want to mess with this machine until XP has been out to the masses for a while and more tried and true info is available.

tc :-) (getting chicken in my old age)

FWIW, I picked up Norton Personal Firewall 2.5 on eBay for $15 (including shipping) a little over a month ago. It's a release and a half behind, I think, but I'm running Win98SE. I'm on a cable LAN and it picks off Trojan horses all day and night with no visible impact on anything else.

Oh, yeah, I also bought Drive Image 3.0 (again, a few releases back, but it handles FAT32 & Win98SE). Got it for $13 plus shipping, and I sent the company my app for a $15 mail in rebate. If you can live with older stuff, there are some deals out there, but they bid like hell for more current software (usually well below store prices, though). My topper was a Canon scanner for $1.25, plus $6 shipping. Seller couldn't get it to work. I added a $3 cable and it hums.

Bob, like thecow, I also use the free version of ZoneAlrm and find it to work well as an added security measure behind the NAT by the LinkSys router. The advantage of using ZA is that you can control outbound and inbound traffic, while the router controls only inbound traffic. Being able to control what programs have access to the Net enables you to quickly detect any trojans that may have been installed unknowingly. In addition you can disallow servers from connecting to the net using ZA. I block ALL local and internet servers using ZA.

There has been prior posts here on the NTFS/FAT32 issues. My main reason for using NTFS on systems is the reliability, it is a very robust file system. In my particular application I have not perceived any difference in speed between FAT32 and NTFS. If there is a difference, the tradeoff to reliability (which is critical) is acceptable IMO. In addition, there is no degradation in performance as the disk space is consumed. Highly recommended over FAT32.

Hello Bob,

If you're looking for something else to do this weekend, you might also consider Sygates Personal Firewall, free for personal use. I've been using it for about four months with Win 98SE and a Linksys Cable/DSL router, and haven't had any problems. Very easy to set up. sygate.com
