Slacker,

<< I'm glad that PCS isn't trying to hype 1x with this handset.... >>

I'm glad they're not trying to hype 1x with any handset yet.

It will be interesting to see how PCS and Verizon's market 1xRTT wireless data in the early going, how they price it, what WAP content and services are available, what accessories (data cable/software) ... and when this occurs relative to the network upgrade an optimization of same.

Packet data is a brand new ball game for US carriers. There is a year of learning here and it will be similar to what the GPRS carriers are going through.

<< this handset wouldn't be able to take advantage of the data speeds >>

I am assuming you are referring to the features and functionality of the handset. This handset I am afraid will be rather typical of offerings in its price range for some time.

To really take advantage of data one is going to have to step up in price, and even then it's early. WAP 2 is a quarter or 2 away, CDMA has recently standardized EMS but that is a ways away and really only Verizon can take advantage of it. Nothing on MMS yet. For the corporate user secure intranet connections to Exchange and Domino (Notes) servers become important.

<< I was sceptical but PCS might have a shot of having 15% of their handsets sold this quarter 1x >>

That will take more than the 2225 but I'm assuming we'll see several more 1x models hit the shelves shortly.

I'm eligible for contract price on a new Verizon model come end of February to replace my 6035 but I suspect I'll be well into the year before I spring for another handset. I'll look at high end KYO models first and hope that some of the accessories for the 6035 can be used with a new model (data cables, travel charger, hands free kit, Jabba earpiece).

If my current model was 1x powered there is no real advantage at this time to higher data speeds in a mobile environment (although there is, when I use the phone as modem in a portable environment, if I can connect securely to a domino server).

Since the 2225 is 1x powered I'd be curious as to what PCS retail salesman are saying about this.
