Joe, Re: "also, you should realize that upper management types like Paul Otellini don't sit around looking at benchmarks all day.

Is your expectation that it is ok for a guy in charge of microprocessors for the biggest microprocessor company in the world to know less about microprocessors that any teenager with Internet access?"

Not that I expect you to know what it takes to run the world's largest microprocessor design groups, but your analogy is pretty lame.

I would expect Paul to worry more about how to push for a product line that demands better margins in a world where such products are being commoditized at an alarming rate. There is a value proposition to be considered, and a means to convince people of what matters most in a product. If you are like AMD, and only have price / performance to tout, then you are in a dead end market with consistently falling ASPs, with man-kind's most complicated invention suddenly being priced like a Sears toaster. Not only that, but the main selling point which drove these processors years ago, performance, is being de-emphasized by an industry proclaiming a lack of any new killer app.

When that kind of thing is on your mind, the benchmarks that show your smaller competitor winning the performance race by margins of 5-10% seem very small by comparison.
