TW,

re: The name "Athlon XP 1800+ itself makes no statement of fact.

No, but it implies false information.

re: AMD has made statements in addition to the name claiming that the processor with that name is as fast or faster then then an 1800mhz P4. So if there is a lie it is not the whole scheme but rather AMD's specific statement about how fast the CPU is.

It's more of a deception than a lie.

re: I submit that AMD's statement is not a lie because on most software a PC with an Athlon XP 1800+ will be at least as fast as a P4 1800mhz system.

Things are a bit fuzzy these days, are they not? Every application is different. Some are faster with AMD, some are faster with Intel. You can argue that AMD is faster on the most applications, or that Intel is faster on the most important applications, or whatevewr else you want to argue. The only real solution is to bench each and every application, have folks figure some kind of average for what they do, then make an informed decision. Not going to happen.

If the situation were reversed, honestly, would you be as sympathetic to an Intel Model Hurtz scheme? It's very difficult, but try to put your perspective on the other side. My guess is you would be screaming "FOUL!".

Is there a certain level of BS on both sides, sure. But people who live in Model Hurtz (glass) houses shouldn't throw stones about lying.

John

AMD has made no such claim. AMD claims that the Quantispeed rating is relative to Athlon. Whether this is relative to Thunderbird or K75 is however unclear.
