Kap, Re: "So Intel went from the undisputed performance king of the K6/PII days to 5-10% behind and Intel's management didn't even notice? They are dumb, but not that dumb, I am afraid."

I notice you have a tendency to twist my words. Either you are trying to be shrewd, or you are simply unobservant. If it's the former, I'll ask you to stop it in the future.

If it's the latter, let me clarify. We were talking about benchmarks, and whether Intel lied about Pentium 4 being the highest performance processor. I argued that it's possible that a) Intel's configuration could have been using what they considered mainstream chipsets, but didn't have the performance of chipsets used by the newest reviews, or that b) Paul Otellini was relying on stale data. Over the course of weeks, understanding the exact newest information on performance is irrelevant to anyone other than techie-geeks like ourselves. Intel has much larger problems than if X Internet site claims that AMD is 5-10% faster. The more important thing for Intel is to continue to innovate, and focus on the next generation of products. Paul Otellini is very different from AMD's loud mouth CEO who likes to brag and beat his chest about every insignificant thing that AMD is able to accomplish over the "evil from Satan Clara".
