It is still true. As the number of transistors increases the number of wires to interconnect these transistors increases too.

Yes it does but with more metal layers the interconnects aren't so much of a problem as before. More metal layers mean denser layout. Scan circuitry though does add to the complexity.

Several years ago Intel disabled the math coprocessor on the 486 to create a cheaper part which upset a lot of people.

This is an techno-urban legend. It never happened except on early engineering samples.
