I think they're just trying to cover their a** in a no-win situation. They have suggestions that something's afoot, but no specifics. What are they s'posed to do? If they say nothing, and an attack takes place, they'll get reamed for not warning anyone. If they give us an non-specific warning and nothing happens, then they've cried wolf unnecessarily. If they warn and there is an attack that succeeds despite their warning, because they had no details, they'll be criticized for not warning *enough* or more thoroughly.

I honestly don't see what they can do under the circumstances other than almost exactly what they are doing. And we don't know, and maybe never will, if the simple fact of their warning may not have already served as a deterrent and aborted something that actually would have otherwise taken place. Surely they'll get no credit for it if that's actually the case.

I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. They're not going to "look good" no matter what they do...even if they succeed.

Fat lot of use you would be in any national crisis.

Why?

Because you look for people to blame rather then offer a solution.

BTW, I'm wondering if there are any others on this thread who are troubled by the response of our intelligence services, as described in the NY Times post immediately upstream

I am troubled by American citizens like yourself. imho you see the situation as trivial, or even a joke.

I am right that has been your attitude of late.

re "deliberate incitement of domestic panic and terror"

The only domestic panic and terror I've witnessed, personally, has been in the media, in their own presentation of the subject. I don't know anyone personally, in real life, who is panic-stricken, terrorized, or behaving much out of the ordinary at all...and I encounter a broad variety of people every day. The worst that can be said is that some are little more nervous than others about certain things, but I haven't seen anyone I would consider "scared out of their wits". Anecdotal, I realize, but still...I think the vast majority of people in our country are pretty level-headed about what's going on...and that includes not reading sinister ulterior motives into any or all of the actions of our government as it attempts to grapple with the situation.
